Hotels & Guesthouses
Accommodations

On this "Accommodations" page I'll list you the different hotels and guesthouses we had the opportunity to sleep in during our travels. Perhaps it'll help you for your next trip !
Our ways to find a place to sleep :
- Booking.com - Not very original, but it works for us ! Moreover, as I was shortly their employee (Remember.. call center, Lisbon) it makes me feel faithful. [See the "Websites" page]
- Directly on the spot ! Especially if you stay quite long somewhere and move frequently from town to town (as we did in South East Asia). Ofcourse you have to make sure that the part of the World within you are is favourable to such spontaneity.
Nota bene
Travelling as a couple brings some features : we're not fond of dormitories (well, it doesn't necessarily bother couples, but us it does) ; we can always share the price of the room (which, in Asia fo instance, was often cheaper than choosing dormitories).
Let's start the list !
As it was the first time we needed to book an accommodation together, the list naturally starts by South East Asia and so on chronologically.

THAILAND
BANGKOK
Amazing House
186 Soi Samsen2, Banphanthom, Phranakhon, Bangkok, 10200 Bangkok, Thailand
We found AH via Booking.com before arriving to SEA. It's a low budget accommodation
where you clearly get the comfort related to the price you pay (hard bed, shared bathroom, ...).
But if you're in Bangkok in May (like us) the most important is to have a fan and air con.
The Room Hostel
774 Ladphraowanghin Road Ladphrao, 10230 Bangkok, Thailand
This hotel was super nice, very comfortale room with a balcony over a busy street (better than TV to endlessly watch the non-touristic Bkk daily life in a wonderful way-out-from-the-center neighborhood (Ladphrao).
MD Rose Apartment
40 Soi Ramkhamhaeng 50, Bang Kapi, Bangkapi, 10240 Bangkok, Thailand
MD Rose Apartment is also "far" from the center of Bkk which, as for the previous one, makes it cheaper. But if you're there to visit Bkk, better to stay downtown to enjoy to the utmost.
CHIANG MAI
Thailandwow 2
2 Chaiyaphoom Lane 1, T. Changpuak, Muang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai, Thailand
We only spent one night in Thailandwow 2 because it was a bit too expensive for us (we were at the end of our 3 months trip). But anyway this backpacker hostel seemed very nice ! The must was the agreable terrace where you could take your breakfast on the morning and drink some cocktails at night.
Dutch Guest House
160 Sridonchai Road, Changklan, Chang Khlan, 50100 Chiang Mai, Thaïlande
This welcoming gesthouse was a bit outside from the city but nothing really detrimental. The room was totally OK with private bathroom (which is a real luxury after more than 2 months in SEA as a backpacker!).
CAMBODIA
BATTAMBANG
First Hotel
No.210, Street.101, Krom.42, Prekmohatep Village, Sangkat Svaypor, Battambang, Cambodia
Arriving by bus from Bangkok in Cambodia-Battambang, if you didn't already book an accommodation on of the dozens tuk-tuks waiting for you at the bus terminus will bring you to the one he is paid for. Our brought us to the First Hotel, that we already booked on Booking.com which was nice, cheap, big room, comfortable bed, TV, private bathroom and a shared balcony to have a view over the dilapidated street.
There it was so cheap that we even remember sharing the price of 5$ per night.
SIHANOUKVILLE
Magic Tree Bungalows
Otres Beach, Krong Preah Sihanouk, Cambodia
MTB is owned by young Russian people. It consists in a bunch of cute bungalows pretty comfortable even though the bed will not be the best of your life (I wish it for you at least). Otres Beach, one of the most famous area among backpackers and tourists in Sihanoukville has two roads along the sea, one directly at the beach and the other right behind it, MTB is located on the road behind but you need less than 10 minutes to reach the sand, although be careful when you're out at night you need a flashlight to see where you put your feet.
SIEM REAP
Advisor Angkor Villa
Bakheng Rd, Siem Reap 855, Cambodia
We booked AAV on Booking.com as well (and thakfully as we arrived in Sea Reap from Sihanoukville at 7am after an uncomfy 12hours night-bus ride - yes, we were dead and unable to think). The comfort was there : huge fan over the nice bed and private bathroom. They also served us a basic breakfast-included (scrambled eggs or omelet with toats, tea or coffee) on the terrace. The location was perfect we easily could walk to the city center passing through a really nice street with plenty of cheap and good restaurants and bars.
We shared the price of 8$ per night.
Visoth Boutique
Sok San Road, Steung Thmei Village, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Tobias and me have developed an unconditional love for this accommodation in the center of Siem Reap. When we booked it for the first time (over Booking.com) it was to spend a "luxurious" night in town as a break from sleeping in a miniscule room on the floor at the countryside school we were volunteering. Finding VB was a miracle for 10$ the night as it was a special offer (usually it's more expensive). After this amazing night, we made another booking (directly at the reception) for our 4 last nights in Siem Reap, the manager accepted to keep the special price of 10$ per night for us. I for sure recommend you to sleep there. Moreover, the staff is adorable.
laos
DON DET (SI PHAN DON - 4000 ISLANDS)
Dalom Guesthouse
Dondet, Mouang Khong, 01000 Don Det, Laos
On the tiny Don Det island you'll find a very wide choice of similar accommodations, it's up to you to pick the one you want. We randomly picked Dalom, and assure you that it was a good choice ! The rooms (with private bathroom) are as simple as possible, with fan and mosquito net over the bed. The best is the balcony !
TAD LO (PAKSE Loop)
Fandee Guesthouse
Ban Senvang Village | Tad Lo Waterfall, Salavan 14000, Laos
This is one of the cutest accommodation you can ever find. FG has few wooden bungalows
standing behind the main one where is a restaurant with a French menu (excellent !). If there's for sure mosauito nets over the beds, the rooms are really rudimentary and a lot of insects can get it... but backpacking in Asia you have to get used to it anyway.
THAKHEK Loop
Thakhek Travel Lodge
Ban Viengvilay Khommouan District Thakhek city Laos, 01000 Thakhek, Laos
The Travel Lodge is renowned among SEA backpackers as the starting point of the Thakhek loop, that's why we asked our tuk-tuk to drive us there. I really loved the room, a very simple decoration but out of light wood and white linen. The bathroom was shared but clean. The restaurant on the terrace has a wide menu and delicious. I don't remember the price we paid but it was clearly not the cheapest accommodation in Thakhek.
Once again the best part of it was the view from the balcony/window.
Sabaidee Guesthouse
Road 8B | Tha Lang, Nakai district, 1207, Laos
Sabaidee Guesthouse is indicated by the Travel Lodge as THE place to stay a night during the Thakhek loop. And you'll understand it if you do. The owner is more than sympathic, the bungalow is charming, but the best is the restaurant. There you have the choice of having a dish from the diverse menu or taking part in the friendly barbecue settled by the guesthouse in the garden with plenty of other backpackers. After diner you can chill and smoke your digestive cigarette on the hammock in front your bungalow. Don't miss that !
Xoykxaykham Guesthouse
Ban Khounkham, Na Hin 01000, Laos
As the loop goes on for few days we stopped at another accommodation, XG. We were supposed to spend just one night there but we found Alfi, our baby monkey right before and so took care of him for nearly a week in the Guesthouse where the owner family showed a lot of kindness. The rooms are super comfy and the restaurant has exactly what you're looking for in such a trip. If you plan to explore the Kong Lor cave the next morning, the location is perfect.
VANG VIENG
Malany Villa 2
Savang Village, Vang Vieng, Vang Vieng, Laos
Vang Vieng is full of diverse accommodations as it's a very touristic part of Laos, we were searching quite long, turning around the town, to find the cheapest price possible for the "maximum comfort". We found a compromise in MV2. It has nothing exceptional so much that it's the only accommodation that I barely remember how it looked. But on the other hand, that I don't remember it also means that nothing bad happened !
LUANG PRABANG
Unfortunately I couldn't find our LP guesthouse on internet, I forgot the name and it seems to be missing on google maps. Too bad cause it was a great one ! But anyway LP is full of similar guesthouses where it's more than nice to spend some nights after wonderful waterfalls discovery.
HUNGARY
BUDAPEST
Artist Residence
1084 Budapest, Rákoczi tér 6, Hungary
What charmed us about the AR is on one hand the look of the building kinda run down, it felt
authentic, and on the other hand the very good location from where you can easily walk around.
The tiny rooms are on the top floor, with a shared kitchen and bathrooms. The only bad thing
according to me was the uncomfortable bed, but it's OK.
Tobias paid (it was his amazing Xmas gift for me) the price of 60 euros for 4 nights.
UNITED KINGDOM
LONDON
Kensington Guesthouse
17 Holland Road, Kensington and Chelsea, London, W14 8HJ, United Kingdom
KG consists in a bunch of cute rooms in an adorable building (pic), it actually doesn't look like any guesthouse I saw. When we arrived at the indicated adress we were a bit afraid as there wasn't any sign of a potential gh in the building, we even called Booking to be sure they'll find us a new accommodation if this one was finally revealing itself as a scam ! But it isn't. The bed is super comfy and the room window allows you to observe the inner gardens of your british neighbours (and some squirrels). The street and the district are lovely, and the location completely satisfied us even though you have to take a bus to reach downtown London (around the City).
We shared the price of 165euros for 3 nights.
ITALY
ROME
Domus Sessoriana
Piazza Santa Croce in Gerusalemme 10, Central Station, 00185 Rome, Italy
The DS was so great ! The location is totally OK [something like 15mins
from Termini - Train Station] and the Tram (3) which goes until Trastevere
stops in front of the hotel ! The setting is fabulous : the accommodation is
adjoining a majestic church, the corridors, the stairway are imposing, and the
rooms are comfortable (private bathroom, air con).
We shared the price of 200 euros for 5 nights in August [3 to 8].
AZORES
SAO MIGUEL
Casa da Adega
Avenida Engenheiro Arantes de Oliveira, 7, 9560-550 Ribeira Chã, Portugal
After flying to Sao Miguel and renting a car in Ponta Delgada, we arrived at Casa de Adega during the night. We firstly realised how much it was big (3 rooms, bathrooms, a fitted kitchen, a huge living room, and ... an impressive patio. We discovered the amazing view on fields, mounts and the Ocean with the next morning sunrise. This house is just incredible, it has all you need, including a barbecue which can be really useful for fish lovers in Azores. The location is great as it's in the middle of the island you pretty close from everything (car needed).
We paid 410€ to have this marvel for us during 7 nights. (We were 4 persons)
Sweden
Stockholm
Rygerfjord
Söder Mälarstrand, 118 20 Stockholm
Part of my 23 birthday gift was to sleep on a boat in the midst of Stockholm. Tobias found this very special accommodation on Booking.com (as usual). It's the cheapest place in town, for a super cool location. Despite, the size of the cabin, which was quite tiny, we really enjoyed our stay on board !
The price was180€ for 4 nights in February.

Bonus : the Rooftop !

Your 2 new best friends in BKK !

Bonus : The pool of the guesthouse next to AAV, that you can use for 2$ per head per day !
