SEA Travel - precious guide

"I remember how we were excited before flying - a one way flight - to South East Asia. The evening and the night before our departure we couldn't stop watching at our thick travel guide ..."

Rome

Rome

"On tour in Rome with 42°C, the travel guide was a precious help as it allowed us to schedule the optimal way to visit."

Budapest

Budapest

"In Budapest, we enjoyed a coffee-break to read in our travel guide what we could possibly do around our current location... visiting the House of Terror or chilling in famous Budapest baths ?"

Berlin

Berlin

"Our Berlin travel guide was written in German... So, I did't use it that much, I was more like following Tobias through the busy streets of this crazy capital."

London

London

"Unfortunately, leaving our Strasbourg flat we forgot the lonely planet of our London trip... It will never happen again !"

Why we use travel guides ?

I've to admit that I wasn't always pro-guides. I've never hated people who were using it (ok... maybe a bit) but I wasn't understanding why going through a city or a country with. According to me guides were preventing travelers to really enjoy a city, too less place was left for intuition, spontaneity, surprise... For me, to discover a place to the fullest one needs to feel lost.

But going for a 3 months (minimum) trip through South East Asia as a backpacker... Tobias and me thought that having a travel guide wouldn't be a bad idea. Stopping in 12 towns (+ our 3 loops) sometimes for a week or more but mostly for only 3 or 4 days, our travel guide was pretty useful to optimize our days, having the time to see and enjoy the most possible.

Why we use Lonely Planet "in priority" ?

It's a matter of fact, before meeting me, for his trip to Central America, Tobias chose a Lonely Planet as a guide. Knowing it, his parents offered us the South East Asia Lonely Planet for our trip, and so on... it became an habit. I've read not long ago that travelers using LP are such a cliché. But whatever, these books are kinda helpful at some specific points of the trip. We're particularly fond of the Pocket ones for our Capital trips.

Here are other resources to consider as useful travel guides :

For London (as we forgot our Lonely Planet at Home) we followed few tips from :

For Azores (Sao Miguel) we found the work of professional bloggers (it's in French but in fact it's mostly wonderful pictures) :
